After numerous other events, Akechi monologues his heart out in the metaverse's manifestation of his father's twisted desires before sacrificing himself in the end, asking the Phantom Thieves to change his father's heart in his stead. By the time the game takes place and Akechi has grown close with the protagonist, he is ordered by his father to betray, arrest, and kill the protagonist, which Akechi seemingly follows through with. His father took him in and made him an assassin, targeting people who politically get in the way of his father or his father's friends and killing them by eliminating their shadows in the metaverse.
He approached his father with his ability, both hoping for approval and planning to eventually overpower his father to avenge his mother. When he was around 15 (canonically happens 2 and a half years before the game where he is 18) he awoke to his power of the Wild Card, granting him above average abilities. His mother committed suicide early in his life, and he was passed around orphanage institutes until he was an independent. He is introduced early on in the game as a confidant, the game's relationship mechanic. He is a high school boy working as a detective with a significant celebrity status.
He is originally presented as a minor antagonist, then party member, then major antagonist, then tragic villain, then party member again (only in Royal). Goro Akechi is a playable character in Persona 5 & Persona 5 Royal.
